Garden Symposium 2012 Grow the Good Life
As a gardener, we “Grow the Good Life” as we plan, dig and putter in our garden creations.
We know how important food is to living the good life, and our kitchen gardens allude to our innate feeling that food is more than just mechanical production.
Our ornamental gardens are filled with wonderments collected from the world over, colorful plumes adding to the celebration of life we create.
As we become savvier, we learn some tricks to garden smarter so we can marshal our time and save our backs so we can enjoy the fun, less onerous parts of gardening.
Let’s celebrate “Grow the Good Life” at the 2012 Kansas City Garden Symposium sponsored by the Garden Center Association of Greater Kansas City and Powell Gardens.
Friday, February 17 Events
Savory Tarts Demonstration by Ellen Ogden February 17 at 9 a.m. Whole Foods Cooking School Next door to the Whole Foods Store at 91st and Metcalf in Overland Park, Kansas.
Savory tarts are the perfect way to incorporate a wide variety of vegetables, and an especially good trick to know for those who enjoy their vegetables lightly disguised in a custard or sauce. Seasoned with sweet fall vegetables infused with fresh herbs or autumnal fruit baked in a healthy pie crust can create a meal fit for a king--without the blackbirds. In this cooking class, cookbook author (and kitchen garden designer) Ellen Ecker Ogden will show you how to bake three savory tarts with seasonal vegetables.
Pre-Symposium Dinner Program by Dan Heims "Plant Hunters: Fabulous Plants from Around the World" February 17 at 6 p.m. Brio Tuscan Grille 502 Nichols Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64112
President of Terra Nova Nurseries Dan Heims travels the world in search of the newest perennials. He and his team have introduced more than 700 new plants to horticulture, including many international medal winners. Join his plant hunting adventures during this lively presentation.
Saturday, February 18
Garden Symposium 2012 Grow the Good Life 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Atkins Auditorium 4525 Oak Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64111 (Doors open at 8 a.m.)

A true kitchen garden goes beyond the simple straight rows of a vegetable garden to combine art and food in ways that enhance the experience of growing food.
In this workshop, you will learn how to design a new vegetable garden or renovate an existing garden based on classic design. Ellen will share six basic steps to inspire you to grow a bountiful and artfully designed food garden at the perfect time to plan your garden in anticipation of ordering your seeds for the spring ahead. Ellen is the author of four books, including "The Complete Kitchen Garden," and co-founder of The Cook's Garden seed catalog. She has appeared on numerous television shows and written about gardening for many magazines.
Join the world-traveling plant hunter Dan Heims for a look at some of the most exciting perennials and tropicals coming to market. The president of Terra Nova Nurseries in Oregon has written two books, including one on horticultural humor.

Roy is co-owner of Northwind Perennial Farm in Burlington, Wisconsin. His garden designs emphasize plant relationships, demonstrated in gardens he has helped to design, grow and install--including Chicago's Millenium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago and the lakeside perennial plantings for the new Oceanarium at the Shed Aquarium. He is the author of "Small Perennial Gardens: The Know Maintenance Approach."
Andrea is a home and garden writer from British Columbia who blogs about organic vegetable gardening in small, urban spaces. Her book, "Sugar Snaps and Strawberries: Simple Solutions for Creating Your Own Small-Space Edible Garden," was published in 2010.

He is energetic, passionate about gardening and does so just 120 or so miles north of Kansas City so he knows what the weather in this part of the country can do to a garden and its gardener. We are all looking for that plant to add to our garden that will not only survive but will shrug off most whatever comes its way and shine. This is your opportunity to do just that.
